| The things I have done |
[Aug. 9th, 2005|07:44 pm] |
| [ | Aural Stimulation |
| | Gorillaz- Every Planet We Reach Is Dead | ] | Consider this to be my summer of accomplishment. In the span of one week I met both Bruce "Evil Dead" Campbell and George "Space Ghost" Lowe. Two dreams fufilled.
In other news I got a new job as a cashier. I sit in a chair for 6 hours and do actual work for about 2 of those hours. It's a fantastic change of pace for me, boring as it may be sometimes. For this month of August, I am working 46 hours a week, and yet it feels like I have more free time than I did when I was working 25 hours a week at my old job, and I am much happier to boot. Go figure.
I got a new phone. Here are some pictures from it:

| | Bjork- Isobel (live in Prague) | ] | I've been permenently moved into my new place for a week now. We got the internet and cable all hooked up, and I found a job nearby. It sucks and I hate the hours, but living out on my own with my friends outweighs it. It's not like I work full time either.
I think starting in a few weeks I am going to save up to buy a new graphics card before school starts. Any suggestions? |

Having just moved into my new place, I will not have the internet until next week tuesday. I might be on this weekend a little bit, but other than that, I will catch you all in a week. See you then! |

| | Nine Inch Nails- Right Where it Belongs | ] | Today I move out of the dorms forever. No more loud bass at 2 am, no more people yelling out their windows for no reason at all. No more questionable living conditions.
I'll still kind of miss it though.
In about two weeks I move into a house with my friends Chris and Mark. It's huge (for 3 college students anyways) and the location can't be beat. This is going to be an excellent summer. |

| Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy review |
[Apr. 29th, 2005|06:48 pm] |
Just got back from seeing Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. While it wasn't quite as good as I was hoping, it certainly wasn't the trainwreck that many reviews suggest.
It was funny. Not hilarious, but it make me laugh a few times and smile throughout most of it.
Things I Liked:
The dolphins' song: A funny little tune that reminded me of Monty Python, which is exactly what this movie should do.
The guide entries. They were right out of the book, and the little animations that go along with them are excellent. I only wish there were a few more.
The overall visuals: The movie has a great design aesthetic. I really liked The Heart of Gold, Marvin, Deep Thought, and of course the Margrathea factory floor was spectacular.
Mos Def as Ford: He didn't have a lot to do, but he makes an excellent Ford.
The new scene where they visit the Vogon homeworld: I thought it was very funny and fit right in with the established material. It worked well to add a second act to a story that didn't really have one.
Slartibartfast: Wow. The best performance in the film, very charming and funny.
The changed ending: I know a lot of people will bitch up and down about the changes made to the ending, but I honestly liked (most) of them, except for the little bit when that love story subplot comes creeping in.
Things I did not like:
The love story subplot: it's not necessary, it doesn't work, but it doesn't ruin the film either. It'll make you roll your eyes a little bit, I'm sure, but it's mostly harmless.
The John Malkovich part: Pretty pointless. But it's hard not to like John Malkovich.
Zaphod: Sam Rockwell was great, but they could have toned him down juuuust a bit.
General incoherence: They rush some stuff and don't really explain some other stuff, so the movie feels kind of disjointed.
So what we have here is a very likeable film that's on the edge of being really good but never quite crosses it. I know I'll go see it again though. If you were forcing me to grade it, I'd give it a B. High marks for effort, but it could have been just a little better. Nonetheless, I think Douglas Adams would have walked out of the theater satisfied. |

[Apr. 20th, 2005|02:51 pm] |
| [ | Aural Stimulation |
| | Nine Inch Nails- Beside you in time | ] | The new Star Wars films have not been great. I've been burned twice now, so you'd think I'd learn. But here we are, a little under a month away from Episode 3, and I am excited. I don't know what it is. Is it because the trailers thus far have been impressive and exciting? Is is the wave of blatant marketing like Darth Tater or the dark side M&Ms?
I think it's just the general buzz of excitement that no films besides Star Wars have ever come close to capturing. And the finality. We are finally faced with the fact that this is the last Star Wars ever. Even after Return of the Jedi, there were rumors and promises of more films. But this time, we don't have that. This is the last time we can possibly get this excited about it, so people are going crazy.
I'm starting to feel it too. I just recently bought a box of Star Wars cereal. I have a sudden urge that I just can't explain to buy some Episode 3 action figures. I'm staring to check online for midnight tickets. It doesn't matter if this movie is going to suck or not. All that matters is the exctiement of watching it for the first time with a crowd of people who are really into it. It's going to be great. Just don't forget your lightsaber. |

| The great job search! |
[Apr. 9th, 2005|09:43 pm] |
My friends and I found a place to live next year. A really nice brick house with 3 bedrooms literally right across the street from campus. Only problem is, the lease begins in June. This gives me roughly 2 months to find a job. This coming week I have decided to apply at the following places:
Sendiks Pick N Save the other Sendiks Every single job availiable in the union the library the dorms Barnes and Noble (or whatever bookstore it is)
Hopefully I will get a job just by the sheer amount of applications I turn in. The only trouble is getting off my ass to do it. If I can get a job in the next 2 months, my life this summer will be awesome. Wish me luck! |

| Diablo II |

| [ | Aural Stimulation |
| | Nine Inch Nails- Home | ] | This morning I decided quite randomly to resume playing Diablo II. For those of you not in the know, Diablo II is an addictive PC game from about 5 years back made by Blizzard, the company currently responsible for World of Warcraft. The basic idea of the game is to run around and hit things to level up and get better items. It's simple and it's fun.
I usually play with my friends Chris and Mark, but I know at least one person on my friends list plays or played Diablo II. So if you happen to have a copy and would like to hack and slash some demons with us, drop me a line. It'll be fun! |

[Mar. 28th, 2005|11:40 pm] |
So I like Arrested Development now. I was wrong, etc etc, great show. But I think now that I have given in, cosmic forces have decided to haze me.
Just last week, Arrested Development featured my most hated of actors, Ben Stiller. As I predicted, he made some wacky faces and yelled. So glad to know he's got such an acting range.
So, fine, Arrested Development, I deserve that for doubting you. That's enough, right?
No. I guess not. Because who is appearing on the April 10th episode?
Zach Braff.
Thanks, Arrested Development. Thanks a lot. |

| | Iron Chef | ] | Today was my 20th birthday, and it went pretty well as far as birthdays go. We went to a Thai place called Bang! The guy who runs it is actually named Bang. That's just how cool he is. I had some coconut curry sauce with chicken over rice and it was amazing.
And as for my haul:
Nine Inch Nails concert ticket- My parents were kind enough to pay for it
Pulp Fiction- I've always wanted it but never bought it
Yoshi's Touch and Go- a VERY fun DS game
The Ulitmate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy- All 6 books in one. Another thing I have always wanted but never bought.
A box of Star Wars cereal- Awful cereal, but I still have the box from the Episode II cereal, so why not this?
So yeah. 20 is a boring year. |

| | Nine Inch Nails- The Hand That Feeds | ] | Finally! A CD rip of the new Nine Inch Nails single! The other copy I had sounded like Trent Reznor was calling you on one of those phones made out of tin cans and a string.
I can see this song being fairly popular. Probably because it sounds like the Kinks "You Really Got Me". But if you're going to rip off a song, it might as well be catchy, right?
Counting the days until the week of May 3rd, when this CD comes out and when I see them(him?)live. |

| On movie trailers |
[Feb. 16th, 2005|10:36 am] |
| [ | Aural Stimulation |
| | Daft Punk- Ouverture | ] | Dear people in charge of movie trailers,
A movie trailer is a wonderful thing. Both a time honored tradition and a way to get people excited for your upcoming film, putting a good trailer out there can really get people buzzing. But in order to ensure that your trailer makes an impact, here are a few simple rules to follow:
1. Don't put it on the front page of Amazon.com in some crazy moon format that takes 10 minutes to buffer and then another 10 minutes to buffer in the middle of the trailer.
2. Make it bigger than a goddamned postage stamp. I'd kind of like to be able to tell the characters apart.
So remember, the next time you release a trailer, don't be some kind of iconoclast and put it on Amazon. Be like everyone else and put it on Apple's website in Quicktime format with a variety of sizes so I don't have to watch it under an electron microscope. |

It'a been almost 3 years since Nine Inch Nails released any new matieral...6 years since the last actual album. Today, nin.com posted a teaser clip of the upcoming album.
Wow. I know it's only a 20 second clip, but I think the fact that I am hearing new nin music at all is enough to get me excited. It's going to be a very long 3 months. |
